The Government Party Law and Justice, PiS, received a bill shortly before Christmas through a legislative proposal in the Polish lower house Sejmen, which allows the government to dismiss and fined judges.

Prohibited from questioning

According to the bill, judges are prohibited from expressing themselves in political matters, such as questioning the legality of appointments in the judiciary.

The law is to be debated in the Senate, Upper House, next week and must be approved even there before it can take effect.

"Exceeds our imagination"

The protests went by the name of "The March of the 1000 Refugees". According to the Polish judiciary Iustitia, judges and lawyers from 22 European countries participated.

- Just a few months ago, it was difficult for us lawyers to imagine that we would have to meet in the outside on the streets in our judge's cabin. But as you can see, the power of the decision to subordinate the courts is so great that it exceeds our imagination, Iustitia Vice President Tomasz Marczynski said in a speech in connection with the march.
