The European Aviation Safety Agency on Saturday recommended European airlines to avoid flying over Iran "until further notice" after the crash of the Ukrainian Boeing. The latter, accidentally shot dead near Tehran on Wednesday, left 176 dead.

"Based on all available information, the recommendation under current security conditions is that overflying Iran at any altitude should be avoided until further notice, as a precaution," said the European agency. (EASA) in a press release. The agency said the instructions for neighboring Iraq had not changed and was to avoid overflight.

Several companies have suspended the overflight of Iran

After several days of denial, the Iranian authorities admitted on Saturday that their anti-aircraft defense had mistakenly shot down the Ukrainian airliner, in a context of great regional tension.

"This is a very evolving situation and a new assessment will be made with the European Commission and the member states of the European Union at the beginning of next week," added EASA.

Many airlines, including Air France and Lufthansa, announced on Wednesday precautionary measures regarding their flights to the Middle East, including the suspension of their overflight of Iranian and Iraqi airspace after Iranian strikes against bases in this country and the crash of the Ukrainian Boeing.
