10 January 2020Turkey announces a ceasefire from midnight between Saturday and Sunday in the "de-escalation zone" of Idlib, an area of ​​North-West Syria still in the hands of Islamist groups hostile to the Syrian government, close to the border with the Turkey is the last stronghold of the armed opposition in Syria.

The offensive in the area of ​​Damascus forces, supported by Russian allies, began last year. Thousands of people have been forced to flee: the north of Idlib is home to around 1.5 million civilians.

Air raids by government loyalists from Damascus in the area in recent weeks, according to the United Nations, added 280,000 displaced people, many of whom are refugees fleeing to the Turkish border.

The news of the ceasefire was released by the Turkish Ministry of Defense. Erdogan would like to avoid a new wave of refugees towards his country and the situation of Idlib which has become one of the topics on the agenda of the last meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which took place on 8 January in Istanbul.
