January 09, 2020 After the increase in employment in the first half of the year and the fluctuating trend in the third quarter, in November the growth trend already recorded in October is confirmed, which brings employment to historic highs (i.e. since 1977, year of the beginning of the reconstructed historical series). Istat points out that underlining that the cyclical increase in employment is driven by permanent employees and by a significant increase in the employment rate of young people aged 25-34, while temporary workers and self-employed workers are falling. At the same time, there was a slight increase in the number of unemployed and a drop in inactivity, which drops to historic lows.

In November, job seekers grew (+ 0.5%, equal to +12 thousand units in the last month). The unemployment trend is a synthesis of an increase for men (+ 1.2%, equal to +15 thousand units) and a slight decrease among women (-0.2%, equal to -3 thousand units '); the unemployed under 35 grow, the 35-49 year olds slightly decrease and the over 50s are stable. The unemployment rate is however stable at 9.7%.

In November the unemployment rate grew to 28.6% (+0.4 points) among 15-24 year olds, it also increased among 25-34 year olds (+0.1 points) while it remained stable in the other age groups. This is what emerges from the provisional estimates of Istat. The inactivity rate is increasing for 15-24 year olds, while it decreases in other age groups.

In November 2019, employees grew by 41 thousand units compared to the previous month (+ 0.2%), with an employment rate that rises to 59.4% (+0.1 percentage points). Istat communicates this, highlighting that on an annual basis, the number of employees increases by 285,000.
