The Newsweek magazine refers to two US sources within the Pentagon and the intelligence service as well as an Iraqi intelligence source. According to the sources, the plane must have been shot down by an air defense system that may have been activated as a result of Iran's rocket attacks against military bases in Iraq.

According to ABC News, an official confirms that the US military is confident that Iran marked the plane with its radar and fired two missiles at the passenger aircraft.

The news channel CBS reports that the US military must have detected radar signals that indicate missiles closely followed by an explosion. The plane is believed to have been hit by at least one Tor-M1 Gauntlet model missile.

Trump: "I have my suspicions"

US President Donald Trump said in a statement at the White House that it may be that someone may have made a mistake on both sides, but that he has his suspicions about what should have happened. He did not want to say exactly what it meant, but he was sure it had nothing to do with the US system.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs tells SVT News that they currently have no comments.

The plane was a passenger plane that crashed shortly after departure from Tehran airport. More than 170 people, including at least ten Swedes, died in the crash.
