The Ukrainian aircraft, of the Boeing 737 model, with 176 people on board tried to return to the airport when it crashed. Iranian investigators say this in a report released on the accident, AP writes.

Personnel aboard the aircraft should also not have contacted the air traffic control regarding problems on board the aircraft.

Was heading for Kiev

According to the report, a fire broke out on board before the plane crashed. In connection with the crash, there must have been a major explosion, as the plane was fully fueled before the flight to the Ukrainian capital Kiev, which was the final destination.

The report also confirms that both of the aircraft's tachographs, sometimes referred to as the "black box", have been found and analyzed, but that parts of the memory have disappeared due to damage to them.

Priority case in Ukraine

Shortly after the crash, the Ukrainian embassy went out, claiming that an engine failure was behind the accident. The airline denied that would be the case and the embassy later withdrew the claim. Now, Ukrainian investigators have arrived in Iran to help determine what really happened that Wednesday morning.

"Ukraine's priority is to identify the causes of the plane crash, we will certainly find out the truth," said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj in a statement.

Land grief in Canada

At least ten Swedish citizens were on board the plane, according to the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. All have perished.

According to data, 138 of the passengers were Canadian citizens, making the accident one of the worst airplane crashes in Canadian history and mourning the country on Wednesday night.

- Our loss is indescribable. It's a heartbreaking tragedy, says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The aircraft must have been three and a half years old and recently been in service.
