January 9, 2020 At least 20 people died and 24 were injured in a road accident involving a bus in Northern Iran. According to the first reconstruction provided by the authorities, the vehicle overturned and crashed into an escarpment due to a technical problem while it was in the northern province of Mazandaran.

The accident occurred in a purely mountainous area. The Tasnim agency says it occurred around 3:00 am this morning (Wednesday 11:30 pm GMT) in the Savadkouh region (about 150 km north-east of Tehran) in Mazandaran province. The bus made the connection between Tehran and Gonbad-é Kavous, a historic city near Turkmenistan and famous for its 11th century brick tower,
listed as World Heritage by UNESCO.

According to the first elements of the investigation reported by the local media, the cause of the accident would be a technical failure. There is talk of a problem with the bus brakes that would have gone into crisis, causing the vehicle to fall into a ravine.
