The Algerian authorities announced this Wednesday, January 8, the composition of the commission which will be responsible for revising the Constitution. A commission composed almost entirely of lawyers. And who will have to submit proposals to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

It was one of the promises made by Abdelmadjid Tebboune upon the announcement of his election. He wants to reform the Constitution and propose a referendum to validate the text. According to a press release published by the official press agency, it is a question of " responding to one of the main demands of the movement " of protest.

As for the methodology, a commission of 17 people, including a majority of law professors has two months to submit proposals to the president. The presidency says that afterwards consultations will take place with political actors and civil society, before the text is presented to Parliament for adoption, then proposed to the Algerians by referendum.

The president gives 7 priorities to this review including strengthening rights and freedoms, moralizing public life and fighting against corruption or the separation and balance of powers. Since 1999, the Constitution had been amended three times while Abdelaziz Bouteflika was president.
