After dominating British political life for almost four years, the word "Brexit" will become taboo. It is a government directive recommending to avoid pronouncing it from next month, a government source said on Tuesday.

Parliament is expected to ratify the exit plan from the European Union in the next two weeks, before departure on January 31. Even if the UK will still have to negotiate with the EU on the terms of their future trade relationship, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is determined to move on.

Elected word of the year, in 2016

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a government source said the word "Brexit" would be used sparingly. "You will not hear the word coming out of my mouth after January 31," said the source.

According to the Sunday Times , the word will not appear in the name of the task force responsible for negotiating the future commercial relationship with the European Union (EU). This group would simply be called "Taskforce Europe". "Brexit" was voted Word of the Year by the group editing the Collins dictionary in 2016. Its use had skyrocketed with the referendum on EU membership that year.
