• After the Finnish war (also called the war of 1808-1809) which was fought between Sweden and Russia, in 1811 Gotland became the first in the country with military service. All men of war were part of what was called Gotland's National Guard.
  • In 1887 they were reorganized into two separate units - Gotland's infantry regiment and Gotland's artillery corps.
  • By the defense decision in 1925, large parts of the island's defense was wound up and in 1928 the name Gotland's infantry corps was adopted. But in 1936 it was time to retire and the old name Gotland's infantry regiment was put back into service.
  • After the 1958 defense decision, the various types of weapons were gathered on the island in 1963 under the name Gotland's regiment. Already in 1966, operations were reorganized into Gotland's military command (MKG).
  • During the 1990s, nearly 25,000 soldiers were deployed to war on the island.
  • In 2000, the military operations were once again gathered under the name of Gotland's regiment. In 2004 the Riksdag decided to close down the regiment.
  • On May 28, 2005, the official settlement of Gotland's regiment was completed.
  • Between 2005-2018 the island lacked regular military forces. However, the home defense was still there.
  • The defense decision in 2015 stipulated that a permanent alliance - the 18th battle group - should be organized and trained by Skaraborg's regiment P 4 and placed on Gotland.
  • With the government's autumn budget 2017, a proposal was submitted to re-establish Gotland's regiment P 18, which was then made on 1 January 2018.
  • On January 8, 2020, Gotland's regiment P 18 assumed responsibility for the 18th Combat Group, which in this connection changed its name to the 181st Armored Battalion.
