Irish and Munster opener Joey Carbery, a wrist injury, will miss the Six Nations Tournament and all competition for four months, his coach said on Wednesday.

Carbery's absence is a big blow for Ireland, whose other number 10 Jonny Sexton is already injured in the knee and unsure for the Six Nations, even if his Leinster club said he was making "good progress" ".

"It's rugby, I'm disgusted with Joey," Johann van Graan told the Irish Times. "He worked hard to come back, he played 80 minutes for the first time in a while and then he is out for a considerable time."

Carbery, who was returning from another injury, injured his ligaments in the wrist during the game against Ulster last Friday (38-17 defeat in Pro14), the club said on Monday.

"I care about the players and I spoke to him on Monday afternoon when we heard the news, and that is not necessarily good news for him," added van Graan.

Ireland will host Scotland in its first Six Nations match on February 1.
