Nadal still in the running: Spain qualified for the quarter-finals of the ATP Cup in Australia on Wednesday.

Rafael Nadal beat 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka despite a game riddled with errors, unusual for the Spanish number one world.

His teammate Roberto Bautista secured the qualification with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Go Soeda which allows Spain to finish at the top of Group B.

The first of each of the six groups and the two best second-placed qualify for the quarter-finals of this new team competition, competing in the new Davis Cup.

Spain joins Australia, Serbia, Russia and Great Britain, already qualified.

The Serbia of Novak Djokovic nevertheless won on Wednesday its third confrontation in Group A. The world No.2 easily dismissed the Chilean Cristian Garin, 6-3, 6-3, after Dusan Lajovic dominated Nicolas Jarry, 6- 2, 7-6 (7/2)
