At least sixteen people died and 40 others injured in a bus accident in southern Peru on Monday. The drama took place on the main coastal highway that connects the capital Lima and Arequipa, used by many tourist coaches.

Two Germans, ten Peruvians and four other people whose nationalities have not been identified, are among those killed, said the prosecutor's office in a statement. A Spaniard, two Brazilians and two Americans were injured.

Eight vehicles hit

Leaving Lima, the bus headed for Arequipa for a sixteen hour journey. In the early hours of the day, the bus left its lane and struck eight vehicles parked on the side of the road, at kilometer 571 of the Pan American Highway. Police and firefighters hospitalized the injured in the tourist towns of Arequipa and Nazca.

Deadly road accidents are common in Peru, especially during the rainy season, but also due to poor road conditions or insufficient signage. In 2019, 1,123 people died in road accidents in the country, according to figures from the Interior Ministry.
