A cyclone was on Monday gaining power off the northwest of Australia, threatening the town of Broome with winds that could reach 125 km / h, announced the Australian weather agency.

This tropical storm should not have any impact on the devastating forest fires that Australia has been facing for months, and which are raging mainly in the south-east of the immense island continent.

Dreaded floods

Tropical storm Blake is already classified as a category one cyclone, with winds blowing at 75 km / h. She is slated to move to category two on Tuesday morning when she comes close to Broome, a town of 14,000.

The meteorological agency invited the population to organize themselves for the arrival of the cyclone and to prepare in particular emergency kits, torches, portable radios, spare batteries, food and water.

The storm is expected to be accompanied by very heavy precipitation. Authorities fear flooding in "the coastal areas of West Kimberley and East Pilbara regions".
