Kapalua / Hawaii (dpa) - Golf professional Justin Thomas has won the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii for the second time in his career.
The 26-year-old American won the first tournament of the new year on the PGA tour in the jump-off against his Ryder Cup colleagues Patrick Reed and Xander Schauffele. After four rounds, the three players were at the top with 278 strokes each, so the win had to be played out in a playoff.
Thomas received $ 1.34 million in prize money for his twelfth success on the US tour. He had already won the tournament on Maui in 2017. Only the winners of the 2019 US tour were allowed to take part in the $ 6.7 million event on Kapalua's Plantation Course. Stars such as the 15-times major winner Tiger Woods, the world ranking first Brooks Koepka or Northern Ireland's top golfer Rory McIlroy were not there in Hawaii.
