It looks strange. The cab of the rolling wheel loader is empty. The driver instead sits just over a hundred meters away, and remotely drives based on video sent from cameras on the vehicle.

And a few hundred meters away, the 5G mast rises above a forest grove.

Quite quickly you can see that the video that the driver controls after chops a little. It is not easy to synchronize the movements of the heavy vehicle. There will be some bumps when the wheel loader bumps into the dump truck easily.

"That's because we partly have 4G, and then you have problems with the delay, to get the image stable," says Calle Skillsäter, technical specialist on connected machines at Volvo CE.

- In this case, we run the signaling between connected devices and base station on 4G networks. But the data transfer takes place on 5G.

Divorce seats say that the modem is not "mature enough" yet, and that the availability of modems for industrial use is low so far.

Security is raised as a problem

When 5G is discussed, a lot is about, for example, faster downloading on our mobiles. Experts, on the other hand, have said that it is actually the industry that operates on 5G networks to find solutions for, for example, remote control.

During 2020, the Swedish frequencies for 5G will be auctioned off. When is unclear, it has been pushed forward in time a few times.

But security has been raised as a problem. 5G networks could facilitate the intrusion of industrial spies. The seller of the equipment may have fully legitimate reasons to have access to the customer's network in order to carry out the necessary updates. But then the network also becomes vulnerable.

- Of course, we think about it. We work with partners who are good at this. We do not believe that solving the problem alone, but that it is a common problem we must solve, says Calle Skillsäter.

Calle Skillsäter believes it will take a few more years before there is a functioning system on the market.

- We need access to modems that can be put into wheel loaders, customers must be ready to receive the technology and the 5G network must be sufficiently expanded, he says.
