September 19, 2015 A fire of vast proportions broke out at Piber Group-Piberplast, a company in the sector of plastic food containers, in Voghera in the Pavia area. Tall columns of black smoke have risen visible even several kilometers away. Numerous fire brigade vehicles are on site. The Piberlast plant stands on an area of 110,000 m2, 26,000 of which are occupied by plants and warehouses.The technicians of the Ecology Sector of the Municipality are carrying out an inspection in the area of the stake and have issued a communication ordering "residents of Strada Valle up to the area that winds near Campo Giovani to keep the doors and windows of their homes closed and, if possible, do not leave the house in these hours. " It is still unclear which substances are burned in the fire. The mayor of Voghera Carlo Barbieri subsequently clarified that the situation is under control "and does not present particular problems".
"We decided to immediately install a control unit for air monitoring - he continued - to check the environmental situation. At the moment, no particular problems have emerged". Plastics for food, products such as forks and glasses are part of the material burned in the fire, according to what was found in a first inspection. Some explosions were heard in the area, caused by several drums of material bursting from the heat, while the warehouse shed affected by the flames collapsed and the roof collapsed. The area will also be manned during the night, as the fire extinguishing and site safety operations are still ongoing and will continue in the next few hours.
