European Foreign Minister Josep Borrell "stressed" on Saturday in an interview with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif "the need for de-escalation" after the death of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in an American attack on Baghdad.

In this discussion "with Mohammad Javad Zarif on recent developments", Josep Borrell stressed "the need to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation", according to a tweet posted on his Twitter account.

During this interview, he was also "discussed about the importance of preserving the Vienna agreement on the Iranian nuclear which remains crucial for the world security", according to the tweet of Josep Borrell.

"I am committed to playing the role of coordinator," added the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Policy in his tweet. This Sunday, he said he invited Mohammad Javad Zarif to Brussels.

Josep Borrell announced the invitation, without giving a specific date, in a press release detailing the telephone interview he had this weekend with Mohammad Javad Zarif.
