A terrorist attack is underway in north-eastern Kenya. The Islamist Shebabs launched an assault on an American base very early this morning in the Lamu region.

It seems that the shebabs used a classic method. Very early this morning, around 5:30 am local time, they launched a suicide attack in a vehicle loaded with explosives, against an entrance to the base. According to a military source, the assailants tried to pierce the enclosure around the airfields. Fuel tanks caught fire, but the fire was reportedly brought under control.

The site is called Camp Simba. It is an American naval base where there are also Kenyan soldiers. It is on land, in Manda Bay, very close to the very tourist town of Lamu.

Two opposing accounts of events

The Shebabs issued a press release announcing that they had taken control of part of the military site. A statement to be taken with great caution, since the movement is known to sometimes exaggerate its feats of arms. According to an army spokesperson, the terrorist operation was postponed, four Shebabs were killed and the area was secured. There are therefore two opposing versions of the facts.

The Islamists have in any case included this attack as part of their campaign called "Jerusalem will never be Judaized", which we first heard of a year ago, when the Shebabs attacked a hotel complex in Nairobi , the Dusit complex, killing more than 20 people.
