The group took the route followed by the National Resistance Army, when the president took power in 1986, chasing Milton Obote . Yoweri Museveni has been in power ever since. He has been officially elected four times. The Constitution having been amended recently, in order to remove the age limit for presidents, he has the right to run for a new term next year.

In Uganda, half of the population, aged under 16, has not experienced this episode, which is regularly used as a reference in presidential rhetoric.

Opponents, including MP Bobi Wine, 37, who announced his intention to run in 2021 , see the march as an electoral operation. " Instead of spending taxpayers' money on this kind of journey, " he said, Museveni should know that it is time to step down .
