"We have never been as prepared as we are today for the attack we are likely to face due to the deteriorating conditions," says New South Wales Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian, according to ABC News.

In the state of South Australia, two people were killed on Kangaroo Island, off Adelaide. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, blue-light crews found the victims on a road, and it appears that the fire was racing their vehicles.

According to ABC News, about a quarter of the island - which is a popular tourist destination - has been set on fire.

Hundreds of fires

About 200 fires are raging in the states of New South Wales and Victoria, and about 100,000 people have been called in to evacuate in the face of deteriorating conditions.

In Victoria, Crisis Manager Andrew Crisp says they are fighting hundreds of miles of fire fronts that are raging out of control. At the same time, he emphasizes that the greatest risk is not the fires that are already known, but rather the new ones that are feared to arise today.

Evacuated when land

On Saturday, the first people evacuated by vessels from Mallacoota also landed near Melbourne.

- For someone who has never been to a fire before, it is very, very scary. I'm so happy to be here, 16-year-old Emily Wellington tells Reuters news agency, who was on vacation at the beach resort when the fire a few days ago reached the community.

She was one of 58 on the ship that was first evacuated, because she has asthma.

"They wanted to get us out so we wouldn't get sick," she told Reuters.
