In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Archbishop of Kinshasa, Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo concluded his visit to the territory of Beni, in North Kivu, on December 31, where massacres are taking place. The cardinal affirms that these massacres contribute to a risk of balkanization of the DRC, on its eastern facade.

In the Beni region, populations are victims of massacres attributed, for five years now, by Kinshasa, to the rebels of the ADF, a Ugandan rebellion.

In the places he visited, Fridolin Ambongo said he had encountered " unacceptable misery " of a " traumatized " and above all " morally weakened " population. Villages are emptying, fields are abandoned…

For more than an hour in front of the press, the cardinal sounds the alarm. " These are thoughtful, planned acts ... The report clearly shows that the objective of all these behaviors is the balkanization of our country ", he warns.

The archbishop said he had noted suspicious population movements: " This is verified by the replacement of the displaced population by populations generally Rwandophone or Ugandophone and it becomes complicated ".

The cardinal is not the only one to make this type of remarks, shared by the Congolese army, but, him, insists that diplomatic actions be carried out with regard to the neighboring countries.

" It is up to our government to deploy its diplomatic arsenal to convince neighboring countries, particularly Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, to stop dumping these populations in the Congo, " he pleads.

If the populations are infiltrated in Beni, it is also the case in the army, he affirms. Fridolin Ambongo is also concerned about the retention in the army of several officers who are under sanctions from the European Union and the United States, a situation that embarrasses this Church dignitary.

Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo also opposed the celebration of the year 1 of democratic change in the country. An alternation, he says, " in questionable power, while in eastern DRC people are dying ". He preaches " communion with them ".
