On a hot plate, there are indications imposed by the accelerating events in Iraq indicating that its land has effectively turned into a platform for settling scores between Washington and Tehran. On Saturday night, bases where American forces are present were targeted, and Sunday will discuss the Iraqi parliament enacting a law to remove American forces from the country.

This comes in the midst of the repercussions of an American strike carried out at dawn last Friday, which resulted in the death of the commander of the Quds Force in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Major General Qassim Soleimani, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy head of the Popular Mobilization Committee, and a number of employees of the Iraqi factions in the vicinity of Baghdad International Airport.

A battlefield
The year 2003 marks a turning point in the history of Iraqi sovereignty, as its land has become hostage to the nature of relations and the size of competition over it between the United States and Iran.

While the bodies of both the engineer and Suleimani have not yet been discovered, the armed factions in the popular crowd are preparing for a comprehensive confrontation with the American forces present in Iraq.

But that will be in the way of retaliatory responses to the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) or Lebanese Hezbollah, according to Iraqi strategist Hisham Al-Hashemi. As for the Iranian response, the Quds Force will adopt it publicly and soon, as expected.

Missile attack
On Saturday evening, two explosions were heard in the center of the capital, Baghdad, before it became clear that it was a missile attack that was intended to hit the American embassy, but one of them landed in the vicinity of the embassy, and the other in the Jadriya neighborhood, a stone's throw from the Green Zone.

These missiles were accompanied by sirens sounded by the American embassy, to accelerate the security services to cordon off the Green Zone as it is an international zone that includes other diplomatic missions besides government headquarters.

And minutes after the Washington embassy was targeted, the Balad base - the largest Iraqi air base (64 km) north of Baghdad - that hosts American forces, was subjected to another missile attack with three "Katyusha" shells, according to a security source who spoke to Al Jazeera Net, without giving further details about The losses caused by the two attacks.

Dangerous Sunday
Although no armed faction claimed responsibility for these attacks, the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades called - by its Special Operations Commander - the Iraqi security services to "stay away from the presence of the American forces at a distance of no less than a thousand meters, starting from Sunday evening."

The Operations Commander of the Phalanges demanded the leaders of the security services "to abide by the safety rules of their fighters, and not to allow them to be made human shields for the invading Crusaders."

In turn, the al-Nujaba movement - one of the crowd of the popular crowd - solidarity with this call, and stressed the need to "move away from the American security services from the American bases on Sunday evening."

The commander of the movement's special force called on the Iraqis to "stay away and not be in the American security companies, not even in their mechanisms."

Diplomatic means
On the level of Iraqi diplomacy, the political scene is no less hot than the military, as members of the House of Representatives await on Sunday a heated parliamentary session to discuss and organize the Iraqi official position, and to take legislative decisions and appropriate necessary measures.

The most prominent thing that Parliament will discuss in the session will be legislation to remove American forces from the country, while both the executive and legislative powers try to put responsibility on the other in the matter of making a critical decision on the future of American influence in Iraq.

The head of the caretaker government, Adel Abdul-Mahdi, threw the ball into the parliament’s stadium, and sent an official invitation to the parliament to hold an extraordinary session for this purpose.

However, there are deep differences within Parliament regarding the appropriate position to be adopted during the Sunday session regarding the presence of foreign forces in Iraq, as the Al-Fatah coalition - the political wing of the PMF factions - demands a firm stance on the American presence, and calls for a speedy decision to end this presence.

The leader of the conquest, Hadi al-Amiri, pledged during the funeral of the bodies of Soleimani, the engineer, and their companions in Baghdad on Saturday, to remove American forces from Iraq forever, while other lawmakers stress the need to deal with the situation rationally, away from emotional decisions.
