Lamborghini decided to lend one of its cars to a family in Colorado who had undertaken to build a replica of a model of the brand with a 3D printer. Sterling Backus, 54, and his son Xander, 12, were able to drive an Aventador S for two weeks, reports CNN. The value of the very luxurious roadster is 460,247 dollars, or just over 411,000 euros.

The Backus unwittingly drew the attention of the prestigious Italian manufacturer in February 2018. They then began construction of an Aventador by creating parts using 3D technology and using elements from other vehicles.

What started out as a project to 3D print a Lamborghini replica turned into a Christmas surprise of a lifetime for a family from Erie, Colorado. The carmaker heard about the project and ended up loaning the Backus family an Aventador S for two weeks. https://t.co/11pixcw6P1

A nice Christmas present

Two months later, the Americans received a call from Katia Bassi, director of marketing for Automobili Lamborghini. "I was shaking like a leaf. It was like receiving a phone call from the Pope to tell you that he is coming to dinner, ”says Sterling Backus, who describes himself as a“ Lamborghini guy ”. The manager did not invite herself for the meal but she offered the fifties and his family to come and shoot a Christmas advertisement featuring them in their home. With the key the loan of a real Aventador, the preferred model of the father-son duo.

"Their incredible generosity will not be forgotten anytime soon," said Sterling Backus, who must finish his model created with the 3D printer by next August. So far, the project has cost him 23,000 dollars (20,000 euros).
