In Algeria, many supporters of Hirak, the protest movement born in February 2019, detained for some for several months, were released on bail this Thursday, January 2. Surprised decisions, according to the group of lawyers who defend them. The release of these detainees is one of the protesters' demands. It comes less than a month after the inauguration of the new president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Several dozen have been released provisionally, awaiting trial, in Algiers, but also in other Algerian cities. The Algerian public channel ENTV talks about 76 people across the country, including 51 in the capital.

Among those affected by these measures today is Lakhdar Bourgaa , a veteran of the Revolutionary War, 86 years old. His arrest, at the end of June, had caused a wave of indignation, because of his age, his fragile health, and the respect he aroused, among the protesters.

Since then, the portrait of this man, who has become a figure of the movement, was brandished during the weekly demonstrations against the Algerian government. His trial is scheduled for March 12, according to one of his lawyers.

The release of detainees is one of the demands of Hirak members. Protesters who await strong gestures from the new president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, whose election they continue to reject. He reached out to them, called them to dialogue, during his victory and his inauguration.
