Will Spain soon have a government? Answer this Thursday afternoon: the Catalan independence party ERC meets its National Council to decide whether or not to allow the inauguration of the government of Pedro Sanchez. The Parliament meets from Saturday and Pedro Sanchez needs the abstention of the deputies of ERC, but the party is divided.

The party leadership says it is confident and welcomes the agreement reached with the socialists. ERC obtained several things in the discussion: first of all, an intervention by the state lawyer, the equivalent of the prosecution, so that the party leader, sentenced to prison for sedition, is released. This follows a decision by European justice which recognized its parliamentary immunity. Oriol Junqueras should therefore be able to sit in the Strasbourg Parliament.

Another strong point of the agreement: the commitment of Pedro Sanchez to open negotiations to end the crisis between Catalonia and Madrid, a crisis of a political nature which requires a democratic solution, believe the two parties to the discussion .

But within ERC those who are for the inauguration of the Sanchez government are under pressure from the harshest separatists, who refuse to trust the socialists, believe that they do not have enough guarantees, even for some, would prefer confrontation.

The nearly 300 members of the ERC National Council will vote this Thursday, January 2. The Parliament of Madrid must begin the debates on Saturday and the 12 votes of the party are essential for Pedro Sanchez to be able to lead the government.
