American Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo will be in Ukraine on Friday where he will meet President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. This visit will be followed closely, as it comes before the trial for the impeachment of Donald Trump. The president is accused of blackmailing Kiev to serve his political interests and the secretary of state has been implicated in the affair.

With our correspondent in Washington, Anne Corpet

Mike Pompeo is the highest-ranking Trump administration official to travel to Kiev since the impeachment proceedings were initiated against the President. The American secretary of state was directly implicated during the hearings before the Chamber.

Mike Pompeo has been accused of allowing a parallel diplomatic network to pressure the Kiev authorities to yield to the demands of Donald Trump. Among the witnesses heard during the investigation, the American ambassador in Kiev, Bill Taylor, will conveniently leave Ukraine just before the arrival of Mike Pompeo. The two men will thus avoid crossing paths.

Will the Secretary of State insist that the President of Ukraine open the White House-requested investigation into Joe Biden's son? A senior State Department official preferred not to answer this question directly.

According to the State Department, the purpose of Mike Pompeo's visit is above all to underline American support for Ukraine in the face of the Russian aggression.
