December 31, 2019 There are 7 people suspected of being involved in the massacre of a family of nine Mormons killed in an ambush in northern Mexico on November 4 last. Local prosecutors said three suspects were arrested on December 26 for "probable liability" in the crime, the rest were arrested earlier but the allegations were unspecified.

According to local media reports, there is also a local police chief in custody, suspected of having links with organized crime.

The facts
The massacre took place in an area between the states of Sonora and Chihuahua, where drug cartels face off against the wealthiest drug trafficking routes to the United States. The victims, including women and children, had dual American-Mexican nationality. They were shot dead on a country road.

The hypotheses on the massacre
Investigators believe the cartel exchanged families with members of a rival gang, but some relatives reject this theory, saying that Mormons have also been deliberately targeted for their commitment against drug trafficking.
