Berlin (AFP) Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) has welcomed the new gas transit agreement between Russia and Ukraine. The continuation of gas transit via Ukraine from January 1 was "a good and important signal for ensuring our European gas supply security," Merkel said in Berlin on Tuesday. The previous evening, Gazprom, Naftogaz and the Ukrainian long-distance network operator TSO LLC had agreed on the new agreement after extremely difficult negotiations in Vienna.
