31 December 2019A Greek oil tanker flying in the port of Limbe, Cameroon, was attacked today by armed men who kidnapped eight sailors: the Greek Ministry of Merchant Navy has announced this, according to international media reports.

The seized sailors are five Greeks, two Filipinos and one Ukrainian and are part of the crew of 28 people from the Happy Lady tanker. In the attack, a Greek sailor was injured, the ministry added.

Among the kidnapped there is also the captain of the ship, a Greek. The injured sailor was shot in the ankle and taken to a local hospital.

"The Greek merchant naval minister, Yannis Plakiotakis, has been informed and follows the story closely with the Greek foreign minister and the company that manages the oil tanker," said a statement from the ministry.

The shipowner is the Eastern Mediterranean Athens company, which is based in Athens, the port police have announced.
