During 2019, the Israeli authorities arrested more than five thousand five hundred Palestinians, including 889 children and 128 women, according to a statement of institutions concerned with prisoners and human rights issues: the Palestinian Prisoner Club, the conscience institution for the care of prisoners and human rights, and the Prisoners Affairs Authority.

The occupation authorities launch almost daily arrests in the West Bank, but usually release some detainees after they are investigated, and refer others to trial.

The statement pointed out that the total number of detainees in Israeli prisons reached five thousand at the end of the year, including forty women and two hundred children.

The number of administrative detainees (without charge) reached about 450, seven hundred patients including ten patients suffering from cancer, and two hundred with chronic diseases.

The policy of torture
The statement indicated that the Israeli authorities escalated their arbitrary arrests of children, Palestinian minors and women, and practiced various forms of torture against them during and after their arrest.

The institutions said that 2019 witnessed an increase in the torture of detainees, during arrest and investigation, and even their release, compared to previous years. The statement pointed out that five detainees had died inside prisons (Faris Baroud, Omar Awni Younis, Nassar Taqatqa, Bassam Al-Sayeh, Sami Abu Diyak) accusing Israel of killing them through a policy of medical negligence.
