About 500 calls came in to the Association Minds suicide line during Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Christmas Day this year. That is almost twice as many as the average for 2019, when about 250-300 calls came in in three days.

"We know that these days are extremely difficult for many," says Johanna Nordin, operations manager for Mind's support line, which during the Christmas holidays reinforced with more volunteers.

Many people feel a greater loneliness around Christmas, according to Johanna Nordin - even though it is a weekend with extra social time.

- Maybe that's exactly why you feel more exposed. Those holding the mask may hold it harder. Many feel uneasy at home, or talk about conflicts that make them feel outside. This is the opposite of what one sees in social media, where people post pictures of how nice they are.

Suicides increase on New Year's Day

Prior to the New Year's holiday, Mind again strengthens staffing, as suicide in Sweden increases on New Year's Day. January 1, 2019 was the day of the year when most calls came to the suicide line. Much alcohol, conflicts and bleak prospects can be contributing causes, according to Mind.

- Many may have promised themselves to try for another year, and this will not be the year they thought, says Johanna Nordin.

Most people who kill themselves are men and especially on New Year's Day, more men than usual take their lives.

"We are trying everything we can to get men to dare to stretch out a hand and ask for help," says Johanna Nordin, mentioning, among other things, the "Stort death" campaign.

How should you do if you as a relative are worried about someone in your vicinity?

- Dare to ask the question pretty directly: “Do you feel so bad that you can't cope with life? Do you have thoughts of taking your life? ”If you are explicitly clear, it will also be easier for those who have a hard time - you will not be as alone then.

In 2018, a total of about 27,000 calls came to the suicide line, and this year it is expected to be up to 31,000 calls. However, Johanna Nordin points out that more calls are coming in if they can receive.

- We need to grow sustainably by taking care of the volunteers we have and by educating more.
