Migrants in Calais, March 30, 2018. Denis Charlet / AFP

For several days, migrants who tried to reach England by crossing the English Channel on small boats have been rescued in Pas-de-Calais, but also on the British side. On December 26, more than seventy people tried their luck and on December 29, fifty.

Thirty-one migrants were rescued again this Sunday, December 29, at sea off Calais while they were trying to reach the United Kingdom on board two makeshift boats. Their boats were in trouble when customs saw them.

Nineteen migrants were also recovered off the coast of Dunkirk. All were brought back safe and sound on the French coast by a customs patroller.

On Thursday December 26, 71 migrants were similarly intercepted by French and British authorities. All of these migrants were spread over several boats.

These attempts to cross the Channel , in the middle of winter, are more and more numerous. And this despite a fairly large gendarmerie device on the coast. It also seems that smugglers are multiplying the starting points along the French coast. These men and women are trying, at the risk of death, to reach the United Kingdom.
