A court in northwest Vietnam has sentenced six men to death for raping and killing 22-year-old Cao Mi Dion, in a case that shocked the country earlier this year, government media reported Monday.

The gang leader, "In Van Tuan," told his gang members on February 2 that the student's mother owed him about $ 13,000 for buying about 700 grams of heroin in May of 2017. He said he wanted them to help him kidnap and blackmail her daughter. . Tuan said he would in return give them money and drugs, according to the Tin Fung online newspaper.

One of the gang members went to the "Mong Thanh" market in the city of "Dean Pin Phu", where "Dion" was helping her mother in selling chicken, according to the newspaper "VN Express", and asked her to deliver 13 chickens to a specific address in the city.

When she arrived, the gang kidnapped her, took the chicken and her bike from her and kept her in the house of one of the gang's members. Tuan then called the student’s mother and asked her to pay him, but the mother refused.

Five men raped the victim alternately for three days, and then decided to strangle her to death on February 7.

Tuan and the five men were sentenced to death on Sunday.

Two men and a woman were also sentenced to between three and ten years in prison for their involvement in the case.

Dion's mother was also sentenced to 20 years in prison in November for her involvement with the drug cartel. The court convicted the 44-year-old mother of illegally storing, transporting and purchasing drugs.
