Dozens of people were killed and injured due to a truck bomb explosion at a crowded checkpoint in a major intersection in the center of the Somali capital, Mogadishu, on Saturday morning.

The death toll reached at least 76, and dozens were injured, as a result of the explosion, which was heard at the intersection known as "X Control".

The mayor of Mogadishu Omar Mahmoud Fleish said that the truck loaded with explosives targeted a gathering of civilian cars in that intersection, and confirmed that the explosion left "significant human losses."

He added in a press conference held at the site of the explosion, that a car carrying a number of "Banadir University" students was completely destroyed, killing all its passengers.

No one has immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing, but the mayor of Mogadishu accused the al Qaeda-linked youth movement of carrying it out.
