A Turkish professor warned women not to dye their hair because of its high risk of developing breast cancer, adding that hair dyes contain 50 thousand chemicals.

Ugur Joshgun, a faculty member in the Department of Oncology at the Faculty of Medicine at Qureq Qalaa University, said that the risk of cancer increases by more than 9% in women who regularly color their hair and who have a family history of breast cancer.

In a statement to Anatolia, Joshqun noted that the International Journal of Cancer in the United States published research on December 3 on breast cancer.

He explained that the study dealt with 50,000 women who have close relationship with a woman with breast cancer, and the effect of hair dye on the risk of developing the disease.

The Turkish professor said that the study confirmed an increase in the risk of developing breast cancer by 9% in women who regularly dye their hair.

Joshqun pointed out that hair dyes contain 50 thousand chemicals, and that many chemicals were removed from these products at the suggestion of health institutions in Europe and the United States, particularly parabens and ammonia.

Risks
He explained that removing paraben and ammonia from hair dyes does not necessarily mean preventing cancer, stressing the possibility of exposure to many risks according to the characteristics of the hair dye currently used.

He stressed that it is not currently possible to definitively recommend the use of a particular hair dye or differentiate between them, adding that "organic hair dyes in theory seem more safe."

Gushqun explained that Qureq Qalaa University plans to carry out joint studies with the Turkish Ministry of Health in this regard. He stressed the necessity of conducting a detailed study on the hair dyes used in Turkey, and the percentage of their formation, the risk of cancer.

Ugur Gushqun stressed that it is not currently possible to definitely use or differentiate a particular hair dye (Anatolia).

Joshqun noted that there are also studies stating that hairdressers who dye hair more often develop bladder cancer.

He added that inhalation or contact with some chemicals in the body can lead to cancer.
