The United Nations General Assembly has approved a resolution condemning hateful acts in Burma against Rohingya Muslims and other ethnic minorities. The Burmese ambassador to the United Nations denounces " unjustified political pressure ".

Arbitrary arrests, rapes, torture, deaths in detention ... The United Nations denounces serious facts. In a resolution approved on Friday, December 27, the international organization called on the majority Buddhist country to end incitement to hatred against its minorities in the states of Arakan, Kachin and Shan .

This draft resolution is yet another blatant example of double standards… A selective and discriminatory application of human rights standards in a member country. It is deliberately designed to exert unjustified political pressure on Burma, ”contested Hau Do Suan, the Burmese ambassador to the United Nations.

The diplomat regrets that the UN decision does not take into account the complexity of the situation in his country. " The resolution does not recognize the real situation on the ground and refuses to take into account the efforts of the Burmese government and people ."

More than 700,000 Rohingyas fled their country in 2017

" As it stands, the resolution will sow the seeds of mistrust and worsen the polarization of the different communities in the region. It will only harm the process of repatriation of refugees and the fragile peace and harmony in the state of Arakan, ”he added.

This resolution is not legally binding, however, it does allow the United Nations to express its concern over the situation of the Rohingya in Bangladesh. In 2017, more than 700,000 Rohingyas fled the country following violence committed by the country's armed forces.
