Abdelaziz Djerad, took office on Saturday afternoon, following the announcement of his appointment as Prime Minister. He succeeds Sabri Boukadoum, a former foreign minister who was appointed acting prime minister on December 19.

Abdelaziz Djerad is a technocrat, an expert on the workings of Algerian power. Academic, holder of a doctorate in political science, former director of the ENA, the National School of Algerian administration, the new Prime Minister is a pure product of the public service.

" As the political field is extremely closed in Algeria, the administration has always supplied party officials, " explains a political journalist.

An impressive CV

At 65, Abdelaziz Djerad has an impressive CV. He was notably Secretary General of the Presidency from 1993 to 1995, then of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2001 to 2003. Close to Ali Benflis , former Prime Minister of Abdelaziz Bouteflika against whom he stood in the 2003 presidential election , Abdelaziz Djerad finds himself sidelined by the president the same year.

It is ultimately this misadventure that will make its luck today. Abdelaziz Djerad came completely from the seraglio, but his ouster in 2003, made him pass for a stranger to the Bouteflika system, while he came from it. His appointment is a pseudo-sign of openness, ”continues the political scientist.

The new Prime Minister must now form a government. A thorny task as the popular movement continues and the election of President Tebboune remains highly contested.
