A military base in southern Afghanistan was targeted by a Taliban attack and 10 Afghan soldiers were killed on Saturday, December 28, 2019. Violence continues in the country, while the US envoy for peace in Afghanistan had resumed discussions with representatives of the insurgency earlier this month in Qatar.

The attack began with a large explosion in a tunnel dug by the Taliban to access the Sangin military base. Immediately after the explosion, assailants launched their assault, according to local media.

Helmand province is a stronghold of the Taliban. Fighting there has been regular between government forces and the Taliban since the U.S. military intervention in Afghanistan in 2001.

No more winter break for soldiers

Four days ago, the Taliban attacked an Afghan security force checkpoint in the northern province of Balkh, killing at least 15 Afghan soldiers and intelligence agents.

A winter break is usually observed by the insurgents because of the snow which makes certain roads impassable. But in recent years, there has been no break in the fighting.

The violence continues despite talks between the Americans and the Taliban, which resumed on December 7, before being suspended three days later after a Taliban attack on the American base in Bagram.
