27 December 2019More than 235 thousand Syrians have been forced to leave their homes in almost two weeks due to intense fighting and bombing by the regime and Russia's ally in Idlib province in the northwest of the country.

The United Nations say so.

These huge displacements, recorded between 12 and 25 December, mainly affected the key city of Maaret al-Noomane and its surroundings, "almost emptied" by the residents who are moving further north.

Since December 16, the Syrian regime, supported by its Russian ally, has launched the offensive against the province of Idlib, the last one to escape its control. On the border with Turkey, this region is dominated by the jihadists of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (Hts) group, but also has over two and a half million civilians.
