December 26, 20199.00 The demographic decline in Japan is worsening. In 2019 there were just 864,000 births, the minimum of the last 120 years. This is the biggest decline ever. There were 54,000 fewer births than in 2018, and the number of deaths has peaked since the post-war period: one million and 376,000 people. The birth rate has been falling for 13 consecutive years. To save the pension system, the government has launched an incentive system to raise the fertility rate.
