According to Interfax, citing the Altai-Sayan branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the epicenter was located 686 km east of the capital of New Caledonia, the city of Noumea, and 677 km south-east of the capital of the neighboring island state of Vanuatu, the city of Port- Vila.

Earlier it was reported that an earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred in the Kamchatka Gulf off the eastern coast of the peninsula.
