“Reporters Without Borders” is alarmed by reports that the health status of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has deteriorated in custody and is calling for his immediate release from humanitarian considerations, ”the organization’s website said in a statement.

It is noted that "Reporters Without Borders" condemns the ongoing attacks on Assange in connection with his journalistic activities, which creates a dangerous precedent.

“The United States must stop the persecution of Assange and immediately remove the charges,” the press service said.

The organization also noted a violation of Assange’s rights in anticipation of the hearings scheduled for February, since he does not have “sufficient opportunity” to prepare for them, and the lawyers do not have “adequate access to him in prison.”

Earlier, lawyer Aitor Martinez said that the next hearing in the case of the extradition of Assange to the United States will be held on February 25, 2020.

In November, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Niels Meltzer said the UK was violating Assange’s rights and also trying to force him to “pay a high price for publishing serious violations of the authorities.”

He also expressed concern about Assange's deteriorating health and stated that his life was currently at risk.
