In Croatia, the first round of the presidential election revealed the rise of the hard right in a country facing pressure from migrants. The name of the Croatian president will not be known until January 5. Croatia is due to take over the Presidency of the European Union in the next semester.

The country has just known the two candidates for the second round of the presidential election. Former Social Democratic Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic, 53, came out on top. He will face the head of the outgoing state, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic in the second round narrowly under pressure from a hard right populist , a newcomer to politics.

Miroslav Skoro, "co-candidate"

His name is Miroslav Skoro . A very popular singer in Croatia, he came in third place with just over 24%. He therefore holds the keys to the second round. Her program attracted the voters of the right-wing candidate second, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, who will have to win back voters. The latter notably voted to deploy the army at the border to prevent migrants from crossing and to pardon a war criminal. And also dissolve the Parliament. The outgoing president has already started with this first statement. " Miroslav Skoro actually played the role of co-candidate during the campaign " for Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic.

Zoran Milanovic wants to make Croatia a "normal country"

Opposite her, the Social Democrat, who came first with almost 30% of the vote, is a former Prime Minister who is " determined " for his supporters, but " arrogant " for his detractors. Zoran Milanovic is spared the suspicion of corruption that weighs on many members of the political class. The 53-year-old former diplomat wants to make Croatia a " normal country " with independent justice.
