Researchers at BTH and the Karolinska Institutet were commissioned by the National Board of Health and Welfare in 2017 to investigate how safe a person's age can be assessed by means of magnetic X-ray.

Researchers have now investigated whether AI can be used to analyze x-rays in an age assessment.

Increases legal certainty

The result shows that the age assessment becomes more secure when a computer analyzes the x-rays.

- We can classify a person who under 18 years with 98.1 percent safety and h a person over 18 years with 88 percent security, says Johan Sanmartin Berglund, professor of health science at BTH.

When a computer analyzes the images, the result is not affected by the human judge's level of competence or the form of the day, which increases legal certainty.

Critical method

Age assessments can be made, among other things, in asylum tests where a person lacks identity documents, to find out if he or she is under or over 18 years of age.

Medical age assessment has received strong criticism. Why did you choose to research it?

- We want to contribute to increased legal certainty. The technology can be useful in many areas. For example, in legal proceedings in child pornography offenses, in medicine in growth assessments and in sports medicine, says Johan Sanmartin Berglund.
