Every tenth pensioner in Sweden is a so-called poor pensioner, which means that the monthly income is below the relative poverty line (in 2018: SEK 12,685 a month after tax).

Over the past ten years, the number of pensioners with support for the elderly has almost doubled in Stockholm County. About 7731 pensioners (2019) live with old-age support, a government grant for the elderly whose pension does not reach a reasonable standard of living.

"Very shame"

Someone who has noticed the development is the deacon Christer Schwartz, who for many years has worked with the initiative "Pensioner to pensioner".

- There are many retirees who cannot afford food for the day. We try to seek them out in my work. It's a quiet group, there's a lot of shame. But we know that many people live below the poverty line, says Christer Schwartz.

Helps with everyday expenses

With funds raised, as well as a certain contribution from the church, Christer Schwartz can help the vulnerable pensioners he comes into contact with, for example by buying gift cards at a grocery store or paying a bill.

- I get frustrated, I think it is a disaster that it should be like this at all. Here, the authorities really have something to do for those who have been involved in building our welfare, he says.
