Several French departments have been placed on orange alert for high winds and flood waves due to a strong storm that will blow with gusts of up to 130 km / h on the Atlantic coast and the southwest of France this night of Saturday December 21.

The storm named Fabien is expected to hit the Atlantic coast according to the latest Météo France bulletin. Charente-Maritime and Gironde are the first departments on the list. Then, these wild winds will spread towards the Landes, the Dordogne and the Lot-et-Garonne to reach the Gers and the Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the middle of the next night.

This classic winter storm started at Newfoundland level, with violent gusts, as explained by Jérôme Lecou, ​​meteorologist at Météo France who can move up to 130 km / h and even reach peaks at 140 km / h .

Indeed, the Atlantic coast is affected by these strongest winds. That said, all regions in the southwest will experience strong gusts of wind between 100 and 120 km / h, ”he explains.

Corsica also affected

He specifies especially that the storm will not only concern the southwest but will have consequences until Corsica: " In a second time, Corsica will also be concerned by these stormy winds because on the Corsican relief, we expect winds which will exceed 150 km / h, he says. On the exposed headlands, we will also be on winds of 130 to 150 km / h. The stormy winds should also hit the eastern plain of Corsica especially the Bastia region. Therefore, vigilance is also required on the Island of Beauty . "

With these winds, there is also the risk of flooding in several departments which have therefore been placed on orange alert. The end of the phenomenon is scheduled for Sunday, December 22 at the end of the day, according to Météo France.
