The Tunisian Football Federation and the Tunisian clubs have decided, by mutual agreement, not to take part in the African Championship of Nations 2020 which will take place in April in Cameroon. Their main reason: a calendar too heavy to support such an additional competition.

Tunisia will not participate, in 2020, in the 3rd CHAN in its history after those of 2011 (victory) and 2016 (quarter finalist). On the ground, the Carthage Eagles nevertheless validated their ticket by beating Libya twice during the qualifications in September and October 2019 (1-0, 2-1). But it was behind the scenes that the choice not to take part was made.

CAF risks sanctioning this decision

Friday, December 20, the Tunisian Football Federation gathered Tunisian clubs for a general assembly during which the subject was raised, reports the correspondent of RFI Farouk Kattou. And the decision was taken unanimously: Tunisia will not participate in CHAN 2020 in Cameorun (from April 4 to 25). And this even if it should lead the African Football Confederation (CAF) to crack down.

The main reason for this withdrawal is that the Federation and the clubs consider that the calendar will be too busy between the national championship, the Tunisian Cup, the continental matches for Esperance in Tunis and the Etoile du Sahel in the CAF Champions League. , not forgetting the 2022 World Cup qualifiers which will resume at the end of March for the national team.

In addition, the CHAN would impose a stoppage of competitions and a resumption during the month of Ramadan, which could have a significant impact on the players. The medical staff of the main Tunisian clubs have also advised the Federation not to participate in CHAN for fear of injury. It remains to be seen who will replace Tunisia among the 16 participants in the Championship. Will it be Libya, selection eliminated by the Carthage Eagles?
