The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are expected to cost around 1350 billion yen (11.5 billion euros), organizers announced on Friday.

This envelope does not, however, include the approximately 250 million euros deemed necessary to move the marathon and the walking events to the north, in Sapporo, in order to limit the risks that could be engendered by intense heat.

On this point, the Japanese side is in discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to find out who will bear the costs of this last-minute decision.

"It's unprecedented, so there are no defined procedures," said Gakuji Ito, executive director of planning and finance at Tokyo-2020.

As for the 1,350 billion, 597 billion will be covered by the Tokyo municipality, 603 billion by the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee and 150 billion by the central government.

According to the fourth and final version of the Olympic budget, revenues from sponsorship and ticket sales are 30 billion yen higher than previously estimated.

According to the organizers, this compensates for an increase in planned expenditure for transport and security, as well as for combating the heat.

In addition, there is a reserve of 27 billion yen to deal with possible emergencies such as natural disasters.

The cost to the nation, however, has sparked controversy, with the Japanese Auditing Commission estimating 1060 billion yen (nearly 9 billion euros) in actual state spending between the bid and the award. in 2013 until 2018.

"The definition of Games-related costs is slightly different from ours," said Ito.

Currently, the budget for the Paris Games in 2024 is 6.8 billion euros, of which 1.5 billion will come from the state.
