Not everyone will wake up to any winter scenery in the next few days, but it will almost certainly be a white Christmas in Norrland and northern Svealand.

"From central Dalarna, northern Värmland and farther north, it will surely be a white Christmas, but otherwise in the south it will be bare land," says Deana Bajic, meteorologist at SVT.

Snowfall in northern Norrland

But with snow comes risks too. During Friday, an area of snow and wet snow will move north over southern Norrland. In conjunction with this there will be milder air with wind which means that there is a risk of rain and undercooled rain in Medelpad and Ångermanland, among others.

- In the southern half of the country it will be mild and rainy. In Svealand and Götaland there will be overcast and plus degrees. And from northern Svealand there will be snow or wet snow. In northern Norrland we have some snowfall but there will be minus degrees and winter weather, says Deana Bajic.

"A gray Christmas in the south"

The night towards Saturday the snowfall will intensify slightly and move towards northern Norrland.

- There may be more snow there and along the north coast of the North can be rain, says Deana Bajic.

It will remain mild in other parts of the country on Saturday. Overcast and, to some extent, rain, so there may be poor visibility on the roads due to haze or fog.

- In Jämtlandsfjällen it can get windy at times, but it still looks pretty calm, says Deana Bajic.

Overall, there will not be as much wind over the country, which is in favor of the view where snowfall can occur.

- Instead of a green Christmas, I would say it will be a gray Christmas in the south. In the north it is at least white on the ground, says Deana Bajic.

Both good for traffic

So as the forecast now looks, things can get pretty calm on the roads this year. Last year, 26 people were killed in traffic during the period December 20 to January 12, according to the Swedish Transport Administration. It was higher than the annual average of 13-14 people, according to statistics from the Swedish Transport Agency.

- You should always think about how the weather is local, especially in the morning and late at night. And in the north, you must of course think of frost and snow slips, says Deana Bajic.
